Cal 6   @   UCLA 7   (SO)   -  Saturday, October 17, 2009
Saturday:  Back-to-back goals in the middle of the 1st period gave Cal the early lead; but UCLA came back to tie it with 13 seconds remaining in the 1st period. The game went from 2-2 to 3-3, then 4-4, until the seesaw battle finished the 3 regulation periods tied at 6-6. In sudden-death overtime, neither team scored, sending the game to the shootout! At the end of the first 5 shooters for each team, the game still remained tied! In the sudden-death shootout, Cal's 6th shooter failed to score; for UCLA, it was Brad Kay who proved to be the hero, putting the puck passed Cal goalie Peter Tartaglia, giving UCLA the win for this night, and a split for the two teams' two-game weekend.

Cal 1   @   USC 6   -  Thursday, October 15, 2009
Thursday:  The roles tonight were a reversal of the season opener, with USC using their home-ice advantage and deeper bench, beating Cal, 6-1. The Trojans commanded the ice in the beginning, leading 3-0 at the end of the 1st period. Cal came out stronger in the 2nd period, scoring early to make the game closer. But, when the Bears failed to take advantage of a 2-man advantage, the Trojans took the momentum back and controlled the rest of the contest. Freshman Nick Helmer accounted for half of the Trojans goals, getting the season's first hat trick.

UCLA 0   @   Oregon 10   -  Friday, October 9, 2009
Friday:  Fresh off a road sweep last weekend, UCLA pulled into Eugene, hoping for the same. The host Ducks had other ideas. Playing his first shift in the PAC-8, freshman Matt Hanlon took his first shot and scored the first goal of the game, and the first Oregon goal for the 2009-2010 season. The first period would end 1-0. In the second period, Oregon scored a flurry of 4 goals in 6 minutes, on their way to a 10-0 victory over the Bruins.

Saturday:  Just like Friday night's game, it was a close, hard-fought battle between the Bruins of UCLA and the hosting Cardinal of Stanford. And, just like Friday, it was a narrow Bruin victory. But a sweep is a sweep, and on the road, it's extra sweet.

Friday:  The Bruins took a 2-0 lead in the 1st period and doubled it to a 4-0 lead after 2 periods. But, UCLA would need all of those goals to hold off a strong 3-goal Cardinal 3rd period comeback effort. Stanford closed the game to 4-3 with about 2½ minutes remaining, pulled the goalie in the final minute, but couldn't tie the game. Rematch is Saturday.

USC 1   @   Cal 12   -  Thursday, October 1, 2009
Thursday:  Opening the 2009-2010 PAC-8 season at home, the Cal Bears showed no mercy in walloping the USC Trojans, 12-1.   A jack-knifed semi-truck on I-5 caused a 3-hour traffic back-up and delayed the arrival of many USC players until long after the game started. Cal took advantage of the Trojans' short squad and rookie goaltender, piling up 10 goals in the 1st period. Cal held on thru the remaining periods for their biggest victory margin in years, while giving USC its biggest loss in PAC-8 history. Cal head coach Cyril Allen said he told his team to "play a clean, smart, tough, focused game."
