Saturday, February 14, 2009: face Oregon in Championship ![]() Battling along the boards - - - photo by Phil Johnson Hard hitting and intense action end-to-end, even during power plays, marked the 1st period battle, which ended 0-0. At 18:23, USC finally broke the deadlock, with a goal by Josh Frazier. USC quickly followed up with a goal by Cory Adler, then by Alex Loftus, giving the Trojans a 3-0 lead. For the next 8 minutes, it looked like the Washington Huskies were out of gas, having spent it all in the fast-paced 1st period. But, the extra tank of fuel arrived at 8:03 in the 2nd, when Tristen Wickliff got the Huskies on the board. The 2nd ended with USC leading, 3-1. ![]() Trojans begin to fall - - - photo by Phil Johnson In the 3rd period, the Huskies comeback built up speed, with Joey Forgette scoring at 15:45 and again at 13:06, tieing the game at 3-3. The deadlocked battle raged on for over 11 minutes, until Joey Forgette scored again, giving the Huskies their first lead. Far from over, the Trojans pulled their net-minder and controlled the action in the Huskies' zone. ![]() Trojans fly high, then fall flat - - - photo by Phil Johnson Huskies goalie, Danny Dougan, kept the Trojans from scoring until Stefan Sobiek was able to gain control of the puck and score an empty-net goal, sending the Washington fans into ecstasy, and the Washington team into the Championship game!
Washington 32, USC 32. ![]() Oregon and WSU square off in 2nd semi-final contest - - - photo by Phil Johnson The defending champion Oregon Ducks faced off against a much-improved WSU Cougar team in the second semi-final game. The Cougs bigger size and intense hussle kept the Ducks in check until Cam Forni broke onto the board at 13:21 with the game's first goal. Kevin Trihey scored a minute later, then Cam Forni notched another, making it a Ducks a 3-0 lead. But the Cougs wouldn't roll over and die. Fighting back, the Cougs narrowed the score to 3-1 on a Trevor Pisinger goal with 0:55 remaining in the 1st period. ![]() Oregon and WSU square off in 2nd semi-final contest - - - photo by Phil Johnson Just two minutes into the 2nd period, Ryan Trump scored for WSU, closing the gap to a 3-2 margin. Befor the 2nd period ended, Keving Keeland put the puck passed WSU's Sam Post, giving the Ducks a 4-2 lead at the 2nd intermission. ![]() Oregon and WSU square off in 2nd semi-final contest - - - photo by Phil Johnson Bryson Crawford and Sam Cehula added goals in the 3rd to make the final score 6-2. In the end, the Ducks broader depth and better passing gave Oregon the victory, and another trip to the Championship game, this year facing their I-5 rival, the Washington Huskies.
Friday, February 13, 2009: ![]() Dave Miller (WSU) ties up David Carlton (UCLA) - - - photo by Phil Johnson End-to-end action characterized the first game of the 2009 PAC-8 Championship Tournament, which ended with #6 seed WSU upsetting #3 seed UCLA. The Cougs capitalized on some UCLA penaltes, but the emotions ran high for both sides. UCLA came back to tie the spirited game, 3-3. Late in the 3rd period, WSU was back on top, 5-4, when an empty-net goal sealed the Cougar victory. Trevor Pisinger scored 3 goals for WSU, Ryan Trump scored 2. Daniel Vaynter led the Bruins with 2 goals.
![]() Bryce Johnson (UW) shooting from the point - - - photo by Phil Johnson Stanford's Otis Chodosh stopped a barage of shots in the first ten minutes of a high-tempo game, before finally succumbing to the potent Washington attack. The Huskies went on to score 4 goals in the 1st period, then rolled on to an 8-4 victory over Stanford. Stefan Sobiek and Tyler Durrell each scored 2 goals for Washington; Joey Forgette got 1 goal and 3 assists. Joe Ulerich and Dave Creighton each scored 2 goals for Stanford.
